There is nothing cooler than traveling by road. Covering destinations on road, traveling from state to state is exhilarating and exciting. But this Kerala couple has taken this process one-notch higher.
They are traveling by road, and also living out of their car, and using petrol pump facilities for bathing and rest room! The couple run the TinPin stories YouTube channel. They are content creators and have traversed many states in India, and plan to cover another 13 states.
A unique way of enjoying the outdoors during the pandemic
Hailing from Thrissur, the pandemic was a perfect opportunity for Thrissur based Harikrishnan J and his better half Lakshmi Krishna to fulfil their latent desire for travel. Their love for travel blossomed in 2019 when on a honeymoon trip to Thailand. It was during this time the couple in car idea might have blossomed.
They decided to start the YouTube channel. It was merely an excuse to travel as per them. They even quit their jobs for this purpose. Harikrishnan was into sales, and Lakshmi was a graphic designer. Lakshmi instead started freelancing.
Armed with plenty of time and freedom in their hands, this Kerala couple travelling in car started visiting destinations such as Himachal, Chikmagalur, and Hampi. Their Hyundai Creta was their home from October 2020. Harikrishnan says that he initially planned to travel by bike but then decided to travel by car because this Kerala couple wanted to start living out of their car.
Preparing for a unique journey fraught with uncertainties
Both families of this Kerala couple traveling in car were supportive, which made things easier for both. Before beginning, both of them packed enough clothes, cooking utensils and provisions, bucket, mug, and electronic gadgets such as laptops.
For sleeping, during night time, they used additional headrests, folded the backseats, and spread a mattress over the backseats to make it into a bed. Harikrishnan says that although the budget for the trip was Rs. 2.5 lakhs, their expenses were far below that. Their main point of consideration was purchasing water.
They estimated a higher budget for it. But after leaving Kerala, they filled their cans with RO purified water, which saved a lot of money on expenses. They were able to save at least Rs. 10 per litre. They had three cans in total – two for drinking water and one can holding general purpose water.

10,000 km already travelled and still more to go
The journey started from Thrissur in Kerala in the month of October 2020. Their first stop was at Bengaluru, and from there, they travelled to Udupi. When they were asked about their best moments, their anecdotes were countless. In one instance, they were standing on the banks of Udupi’s Suvarna River and taking photographs.
A boatman and his little son paddled towards them on the boat. They wanted to give a free ride to the couple. Their generosity moved the couple. Despite the language barrier, the couple and the boatman became thickly engrossed in exciting conversations.
They also managed to spend a reasonable amount of time with the Siddi tribes of Yelapur. A Kerala couple traveling to such exotic places is a sight to behold. They moved farther ahead to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai. They kept traveling on to Aurangabad, followed by Bhuj, and then Rann of Kutch, and then the beautiful sceneries of Udaipur.
They also travelled to different places of Rajasthan, namely Pushkar, Jaisalmer, and Jaipur. Currently, as we know, they are in Jammu and Kashmir. So that’s more than 10,000 km travelled out of their car, and this Kerala couple is still going strong.
