Buying towels can become a challenging task if you don’t know what exactly you are looking for. It seems simple enough – choose a colour you like, check the price, proceed to buy…rinse and repeat. But alas, this kind of slipshod buying process results in a linen closet full of boring towels that may not be value for your money.

So how do select the right towel? Whether you’re buying a hand towel, bath towel or face towel online, there are some important attributes to check, such as:

* Softness:
The number one attribute of a really good bath or hand towel is its softness. Nobody likes a thin, scratchy towel that feels like rubbing sandpaper on your bare skin. A cotton towel that becomes scratchy and looks starched upon drying is a towel with a low thread count. The thread count is the first thing to check: the higher the thread count, the softer and plusher the towel.

* Absorbency:
It naturally follows that a soft and plush towel will be super absorbent. The whole point of a towel is to wick away excess moisture from the skin quickly. It should do so in one swipe – if you have to keep dabbing or swiping at your skin with the towel, it’s not a very absorbent one and you are better off with another. However, some highly absorbent towels tend to dry slower because the moisture goes right down to the core of the fabric. If you live in a humid climate, the towel may not dry as fast as you like, and even give rise to mould. Pop it in the dryer or air dry in natural light for faster drying.

* Softer with every wash:
Towels do pill and get thinner with use. But bath and hand towels from leading brands do not. Leading bath linen brands in India use Hygro cotton, which is specially created to result in super soft and highly absorbent hand and bath towels that get softer with every wash. In fact, you can continue using the same towels for years without them losing form or becoming rough and scratchy. This is a great quality to have, especially in face towels.

* Retains colour despite several washes:
The towel cannot leach colour with every wash, nor become faded. Some amount of colour loss is natural, but only when the towel has been used for several years and is not in the best of shape any more. Ideally, with the right care and maintenance, the towel you buy must be able to last at least five years without losing colour integrity.

* Available in many colours and prints:
Who says towels have to be boring whites? Leading bath linen brands have an amazing variety of printed towels that showcase several colours and patterns to suit every design palate. You can buy printed towels that go with the bathroom’s décor, or choose bold and hot colours if the whimsy strikes you. Children’s towels can be more adventurous, with cartoon character motifs or graphic prints.

* Easy to maintain:
When buying a towel online, make sure to read the manufacturer’s list of care and maintenance instructions. Following these diligently will ensure that the product lasts for yours without losing softness and colour. Look for towels that require a basic machine wash with a good quality liquid detergent. Preferably wash like colours together, and avoid bleaching or dry cleaning the towel.
We hope the points mentioned above help you shop for the most perfect towels for your home.
